OUR STORY

Family-Owned Business

1926 was the year Johnston’s opened its doors in Monticello, Florida. Felix and Alice Johnston operated a grocery store and a meat locker rental service for folks before households had refrigerators. Rural living back then mean that most people did nearly all of their shopping locally and Johnstons very quickly became interwoven into the community.

By the 1950s the next generation stepped up to the plate with Felix’s daughter Felice and her new husband “Cap” Shuman. When Cap returned home from the Korean War, he and Felice continued Johnston’s tradition of outstanding service and the craft of country-cured smoked meats with customers around the entire state of Florida and into Georgia.

In 1997, Cap’s daughter Becky and husband Hal Bennett made the decision to continue the family tradition. In 1999, The Tallahassee Democrat featured an article about Hal’s future plans for Johnstons. A few years later Hal expanded the country store with a wrap around front porch, full meat counter and processing facility.

The year 2012 brought another expansion… the Mobile Kitchen Trailer. Available for Emergency Food Response and large catering events, Johnston’s can feed 10,000 people per day.

Today, customers return year after year for the quality meats and personal customer service from the folks at Johnston’s Meat Market. Visit our store in Monticello, Florida for our smoked meats, country cooking spices, syrups and BBQ sauce. Local honey too!
